xaPTTa 1*XqwBV Since their inception, High Places have created a signature
H]cCyuCdH sound out of using bass-heavy yet crisp beats, lilting vocal
ak%8|'} melodies and syncopated rhythmic lines performed on folk
Q,scjt[ percussion instruments, guitar duets turned into treated
Q?~l=}2 samples, and percussive lines created from the manipulation of
Rcu/ @j{O household objects. The songwriting is expansive and fluid, all
{|qz> the while managing to be concise. High Places gravitate toward
cB|](gWS~ the organic over the electronic, and that natural aesthetic
9vXrC_W9 adds warmth and intimacy to the recordings.
<3i!{"} gX[6WB"p High Places' self-titled debut was recorded by the band's Rob
y<)x`&pcD Barber and Mary Pearson in their apartment in Brooklyn's Fort
c Mq|`CM Greene neighborhood. They employed a wide variety of
iKu5K0x{>I instruments to make this album, ranging from the more
{L#P
dj{ traditional: 12 string guitar, banjo, shakers and rattles,
h>4\I;Ij bass, bells and Kalimba; to the inventive: plastic bags,
XWkYhTaY mixing bowls, wood blocks and other common household objects.
HR4^+x The album has a contemplative and organic lyrical tone
(u *-( emphasized by the themes of goodness manifested in nature,
$ #CkI09 hardship and wonder as necessities to human existence and
VQ+Xh growth. Additionally, the idea of maturation and development
%.]qkGZe# is further accented through the recurring mention of trees and
~GZ(Ou-& their extending, enveloping braches.
